Burghley Park made double weekend of club historic first’s by debuting a Sunday 2nd league XI in the Grantham and Melton cricket league. What better way to start the campaign with a match against our nearest and dearest, Stamford Town.
Town’s innings was anchored by Alex Birch, who scored 52 runs off 55 balls, including 10 fours. Damien Herrick contributed a swift 43 from 39 deliveries, while Philip Holland added 25 runs. Despite these efforts, Stamford Town concluded their innings at 206 for 8. Excellent all round bowling display with Will Portlock’s 4-32 off 7 and Ella Briault 2-40 off 8 overs respectively were the highlights. Nods also to OJ Plank and Alec Baker who bowled a tight 10 over spell at the top.
In response and chasing a target of 207, Park’s chase was led by Harry Armstrong, who delivered an outstanding 98 runs off 68 balls, featuring 18 fours. Keeper Charlie Sharpe provided solid support with an unbeaten 77 from 73 balls, including 11 boundaries. Their partnership propelled Burghley Park to victory in just 27 overs. Burghley taking the spoils with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Town.
It was incredibly pleasing to have so many juniors playing in the match from both sides and a real testament to cricket being strong in the local area.
