On a sunny but blustery evening at Burghley, stand-in captain Matt Davies won the toss and invited Barnack to bat first — a decision that would ultimately hand the visitors the platform they needed to take control of the contest.
Barnack’s openers made a composed start against Simon Sherwin (0 for 37 from 4 overs) and Cameron Fish, who was the standout performer with 3 for 11 from his three overs. Although Burghley began tidily, Barnack were quick to punish anything loose and gradually built momentum. The pressure continued through the first changes, Theo Nelson (0 for 27 from 3) and Jack Collins (0 for 28 from 2), as both openers progressed to well-earned half-centuries before retiring. Even with Nelson asking questions with some lively short bowling, Burghley found it difficult to stem the flow. Cooper Hewat claimed the only wicket of the innings, with Sean Whitmore taking a smart catch, but Barnack’s batting depth ensured they closed strongly on 142 from their 16 overs.
In reply, Burghley’s openers began positively, finding the gaps and keeping the scoreboard moving with the occasional boundary. Lawrence Kinge was bowled for 14 in the fifth over, however, and his dismissal triggered a damaging cluster of wickets. Skipper Davies fell soon after for his third duck of the season, while Pete Hewat (14) and Brad Hurn (17) were also unable to turn their starts into something more substantial. Simon Sherwin helped restore some stability with a run-a-ball 21, supported by David Popple, but once both were bowled the chase was effectively beyond reach. Cameron Fish (15 not out) and Jack Collins (2 not out) remained at the close to guide Burghley beyond the 100 mark, ensuring the side kept battling to the end despite a disappointing result.
