Friendly XI Chase Down 209 to Seal Impressive Seven-Wicket Victory

James Biggs15 Jun - 11:43

The Burghley Park Friendly XI produced an excellent run chase on Sunday to overhaul Uppingham Town’s 208 and secure a seven-wicket victory with just two balls to spare.

The side featured five juniors: Teddy Hamilton, Eshan Matharu, Miles Munro, Charlie Ragg and Seb Freeman, alongside an experienced group of senior players, and once again the youngsters played a key role in an impressive team performance.

After losing the toss, Burghley were sent into the field as Uppingham elected to bat first. The visitors got off to a positive start, with Broughton striking 42 and Levy anchoring the innings with a well-made 50.

Burghley stuck at the task well throughout the innings, sharing the wickets around and never allowing Uppingham to completely run away with the game. Junior Eshan Matharu was the standout performer with the ball, claiming excellent figures of 2-22 from his five overs. Charlie Ragg and Seb Freeman also picked up wickets, while the fielders backed up the bowlers well as Uppingham closed on 208-5 from their 35 overs.

Chasing 209 for victory, Burghley knew they would need contributions throughout the order, and that’s exactly what they got.

Charlie Gairdner laid the foundations with 21 before John Barker took charge of the innings. Barker struck a superb 74 from 75 balls, finding the boundary 11 times and keeping the required rate firmly under control. He was brilliantly supported by Laurence Kinge, whose maiden fifty for Burghley, a fluent 68 from just 56 deliveries kept the momentum firmly with the home side.

Even when Uppingham managed to pick up a couple of wickets, Burghley never lost their composure. Teddy Hamilton contributed a valuable 16, while Eshan Matharu once again played his part, finishing unbeaten on 7, with one particularly lusty pull shot to the square leg boundary that sounded like a gunshot.

With the scores level in the final over, it was fitting that the winning runs came from the bat of a junior player. With the fielders closed in to protect the single, Matharu calmly chipped the ball away to leg to bring up the winning run and complete a deserved seven-wicket victory, with Hamilton alongside him at the other end.

Not for the first time this season, Burghley’s younger players were there at the finish, scoring the decisive runs and once again demonstrating the strength of the club’s junior pathway.

A successful chase, a strong all-round team effort, and another enjoyable Sunday afternoon for Burghley Park.
