Captain Weller won the toss and elected to bat on what appeared to be a worn but flat surface, with a lightning-fast outfield offering plenty of value for shots. However, Burghley’s innings got off to a nervous start, slipping to 2-0 after three overs, with both runs coming via extras. At that stage, the pre-match pitch assessment appeared questionable.
What followed was a remarkable turnaround. Openers Gallimore and Burton launched a stunning counter-attack, taking the score to 74 without loss after the first 10 overs and completely dominating the powerplay. Gallimore was particularly aggressive, dispatching the bowling to all parts of the ground before eventually falling when attempting to clear the sightscreen, edging through to the wicketkeeper.
Jackson came and went, before Burton’s excellent innings ended when he advanced down the track to a seamer and could only top-edge a catch. Weller then joined Williams and the pair rebuilt steadily, keeping the scoreboard ticking. Weller looked well set before falling shortly after drinks, caught at point while attempting to accelerate.
Ashwin joined Williams, who continued to anchor the innings superbly. Having played with maturity and composure throughout, Williams brought up a deserved half-century before eventually being dismissed for an excellent 59.
The lower order then provided the perfect finish. Gilmour added valuable late runs and produced the shot of the day, launching the Uppingham left-arm seamer high over the hedge and into the neighbouring field for a huge six. Burghley closed on a formidable 247, feeling confident they had posted a competitive total.
That confidence quickly translated into the field as Burghley’s bowlers started strongly, restricting Uppingham’s openers and preventing them from scoring freely. Fish struck first in memorable fashion, bowling Welch with a delivery that had everyone appealing for a caught behind, only for it to be revealed that the ball had clipped the bail, dislodging it while the other remained perfectly balanced on the stumps.
As Uppingham began to keep pace with the required rate, Weller rotated his bowlers intelligently in search of a breakthrough. The game then swung decisively when Armstrong entered the attack.
The young leg-spinner produced a spell of devastating quality, removing the dangerous overseas player before ripping through the middle and lower order. Armstrong finished with extraordinary figures of 7-19, blowing away the Uppingham batting line-up and sealing a convincing Burghley victory.
It was a fantastic day for the Bears and another example of the spirit, togetherness and resilience that runs throughout this talented group. With the win, Burghley climb into the top three and keep their title defence firmly on track.
