After losing the toss, Burghley were surprisingly asked to field first on what appeared to be a lively green top — although anyone who knows Burghley knows it normally flattens out quicker than the teas disappear.
Gareth Hook and Cameron Fish opened the bowling and immediately caused problems with a disciplined spell from both ends. The only thing threatening to slow Burghley down early on was the fielding, with dropped catches from Williams and Gilmour becoming a weekly subscription service rather than isolated incidents. Fortunately for Burghley, the bowlers were far less forgiving.
Hook eventually broke through before Fish joined the party, with Ufford quickly collapsing to 33-4. Captain Josh Weller then entered the attack from the Diana End and continued the damage as wickets tumbled regularly.
Hook finished an excellent spell with figures of 3-22 from his 9 overs before Ryan Gilmour replaced him at the Pavilion End and struck immediately, finishing with 2-11 from 3 overs.
The innings was wrapped up one ball after drinks when Craig Burton produced a sharp one handed catch off Weller, followed by celebrations that can only be described as “Imran Tahir-esque”, as Ufford were bowled out for just 61. Weller finished with outstanding figures of 4-10 from 5.1 overs.
Chasing 62, Weller and Burton strolled to the crease looking to make quick work of the target. Weller got Burghley off to a fast start before falling for 15, while Silver followed shortly after for what can only be described as a spicy duck.
That only brought Burton centre stage. The opener unleashed a brutal counterattack, racing to 43 from just 27 balls and sealing victory in style with a monstrous six as Burghley chased the total down in just 7.5 overs.
A huge 20 points for Burghley as they bounce back emphatically after week one. Attention now turns to a week off before the hotly anticipated clash against Newborough on the 31st.
