Silver Sets Up Sensational Win

Silver Sets Up Sensational Win

James Biggs12 Jun - 07:42

A sterling batting performance from Ben Silver set up a brilliant win over reigning league champions Peterborough Town on Sunday.

After a wash out Saturday Burghley had high hopes to beat the visiting Peterborough town. Stand in Skipper Ryan Gilmour won the toss and elected to bowl on a gloomy day. Opening the batting James Laud and captain Gilmour presented a measured start with Laud falling for 15 and Gilmour beaten for 7. Silver came to the crease and started to craft his innings. A flurry of wickets fell around Silver as Burghley tried to steady the ship. Burghley’s collapse saw Platt, Jackson and Sorensen all fall for single digits before Sharpe looked to help Silver return the Burghley innings to a sense of normality. Unfortunately, Sharpe fell for 11 to the experienced bowling of Bash Hussain (the Burghley Park CC coach). With the hosts at 106-6 for Peterborough were in the ascended when Gareth Hook entered the crease looking to rebuild. Hook and Silver managed to run hard and punch the bad ball curating a partnership of 87 before Hook fell to a good slower ball. Silver cruised to his hundred eventually falling for 124. The hosts set a strong target of 236 which was added to by 12 penalty runs for slow over rate by Peterborough.

Chasing 248, the Peterborough side had to deal with the bustling young off spinner cum seamer James Laud who got the early wickets of Medcalf and Subramonian caught behind for single digits each by Sharpe who had donned the gloves. Hook opened from the other end and bowled tightly eventually getting the reward of Mangat’s wicket off who chopped on after rebuilding. With the openers Hook and Laud off, Portlock was next strike getting Howard who had built a respectable total of 36 caught and leading edge that Portlock took off his own bowling. A flurry of wickets fell with Nanda being run out first ball and Manzeer quickly departed off the bowling of Portlock for a duck caught by Azhar.Hussain was slowly building runs whilst others fell around him. Signal was run out by Hook after a good bit of work by Sharpe when the batsmen failed his to make his ground. Hussain was quietly going about his work until he managed to find Laud at long on off the bowling of Gilmour. With one wicket left to get Singh found the boundary regularly off the bowling of Portlock. However, Gilmour made sure that Burghley crossed the finish line getting Haider caught by Azhar at 45. Burghley won by 45 runs and will visit Barnack this weekend, looking to keep the winning momentum going.
