After winning the toss, Burghley opted to bowl first on a pitch that seemed likely to offer some assistance. The opening bowling duo of Ashwin (2-34) and Potter (1-14) made early breakthroughs, with Ashwin taking two wickets—both caught in the slips by Biggs and Potter—and Potter dismissing the opening batsman with some rapid, aggressive bowling, well caught by Crossley at cover.
Werrington began to rebuild, but the introduction of Joe Youngs halted their progress, as he took 2-23 in his four overs. Although Mohammed Azhar and Keyan Gace bowled well, they were unlucky not to take any wickets. Werrington managed to keep the scoreboard moving, though they struggled to find regular boundaries. Josh Slade claimed a wicket from his three overs, and Oscar Jackson bowled superbly, finishing with 2-19 from his five overs.
Biggs was brought back for the final few overs and removed Werrington’s numbers 8 and 11 batsmen, ending with figures of 2-36. Despite a few lapses in fielding, Burghley did well to restrict Werrington to 220 on a pitch that played truer than expected.
Burghley’s reply started shakily with opener Ben Parker dismissed for 0 in the second over, bringing Joe Youngs to the crease. However, concerns were quickly alleviated as opener Laud and Youngs built a strong partnership. Laud, continuing his excellent form, smoothly reached 50, with Youngs following suit shortly after. The pair took Burghley past 150 for the loss of just one wicket, until Youngs was adjudged LBW for a well-crafted 70, leaving Burghley 50 runs short of the target. Sam Crossley then joined Laud in the middle, with Laud increasing the scoring rate and notching up yet another century, finishing on 106* and surpassing 1,000 runs for the club this season! Crossley chipped in with a quick 21* to guide Burghley to a 20-point victory.
It was an excellent all-around team performance at a venue where Burghley has traditionally struggled. Next weekend, they will welcome Barnack to the Park.
