Burghley Park secure victory after disciplined bowling display and composed chase

James Biggs8 Jun - 09:53

Saturday 2s bounce straight back with victory over Woodhall Spa.

With heavy cloud cover threatening throughout the afternoon, both captains agreed before the start to reduce the contest from 45 overs to 35 overs per side, with bowlers restricted to a maximum of seven overs each. Having won the toss, Burghley Park captain James Biggs had little hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first in conditions that looked likely to favour the bowlers.

The decision paid immediate dividends as Burghley's attack produced a controlled and disciplined display. James Biggs set the tone himself, bowling a miserly opening spell of 1-20 from his full allocation of seven overs, including two maidens. Alongside him, Nick Fisher was outstanding, returning figures of 2-17 from seven overs while also bowling two maidens and maintaining relentless accuracy.

The visitors made a steady start through A Barker (20 from 23 balls) and A Hodson (13 from 30), but Burghley struck twice in quick succession to leave them 45-2. Fisher accounted for both Hodson and S Behan (3), reducing the visitors to 54-3 and firmly shifting momentum towards the home side.

A partnership between M Sargeant and E Leggate threatened to rebuild the innings. Sargeant compiled 33 from 48 balls, including five boundaries, while Leggate added 32 from 45 deliveries with five fours and a six. Together they guided the visitors past the hundred mark before Josh Gallimore produced the decisive spell of the innings.

Gallimore was exceptional, claiming 4-26 from his seven overs with two maidens. He removed Sargeant, claimed C Parsons for a duck with a good catch in the deep from C Biggs, dismissed Leggate at a crucial moment and then cleaned up O Steadman to rip through the middle and lower order. Charlie Biggs also made important breakthroughs with 2-22 from four overs, including the wicket of C Lee, who was well caught by James Biggs.

Despite a late counterattack from D Bourke, who finished unbeaten on 21 from just 16 balls, the visitors were bowled out for 153 in their 35 overs.

Chasing 154 for victory, Burghley suffered an early setback when Josh Gallimore fell for a duck at 15-1, and David Platt followed shortly afterwards for 8. However, Charlie Biggs immediately seized the initiative, blasting 21 from only 13 deliveries with some imperious stroke play, striking four boundaries before becoming the third wicket to fall with the score on 47.

Matt Davies then played a key hand in rebuilding the innings. His composed 28 from 36 balls, featuring four fours, helped steady the chase. The Woodhall Spa bowlers were seemingly unable to recognise that they kept bowling to Davies' strength, as he duly kept dispatching the ball behind square on the leg side and carried Burghley to 80 before his dismissal. At the other end, Bradley Hurn battled hard for 9 from 35 balls, helping absorb pressure during a tricky middle phase.

The game was ultimately won through a pair of valuable contributions from Harry Sorensen and Stephen Harker-Brown. Sorensen struck 25 from 31 balls with four boundaries, while Harker-Brown matched him with 25 from 37 deliveries, including five fours. Their runs pushed Burghley into a commanding position and took the score beyond 130.

Although the visitors managed a couple of late wickets, including the dismissal of James Biggs for 1, there was never any real panic. Lawrence Rayner remained unbeaten on 7, while Nick Fisher finished the job with an unbeaten 6 from five balls as Burghley reached 154-8 in 31.1 overs to complete a good victory with nearly four overs to spare.

For the visitors, A Barker produced an good spell of 2-15 from seven overs, including four maidens, while O Steadman (2-47) and C Lee (2-27) each claimed two wickets. However, Burghley's batting depth and composure ensured they always remained in control of the chase.

The victory was built on an outstanding bowling performance led by Gallimore (4-26), Fisher (2-17), Biggs, C (2-22) and Biggs, J (1-20), before valuable contributions throughout the batting order saw Burghley safely home despite the challenging overhead conditions.
