On a day that bowling first looked to be the best choice, skipper Andy Briault called incorrectly and lost the toss, and Burghley were invited to bat first.

Losing Chris Armstrong early to a golden duck, Briault (31) & Matt Davies (33) started well putting on over 60 before Briault gifted his wicket away. After building a solid platform Burghley had a little wobble, losing 3 cheap wickets either side of drinks. With some stability and rebuilding required, up stepped the counter-attacking Simon Sherwin, brilliantly partnered by Jimmy Biggs. Between them they put on a partnership of 85, with Sherwin being the aggressor, scoring 62. Following the departure of Sherwin, there was still 28 runs required to get to over 200 which Biggs marshalled with a very respectable 42, before being caught in the final over. After being asked to bat first, Burghley finished on 206/8 and the first goal of maximum batting points was achieved.

Burghley’s bowling attack initially looked tired, Banthorpe started with a few wides and Moulton Harrox got off to a good start only for Banthorpe to pull out a peach and dismiss the threatening batsman Broomfield with an inswinging Yorker. J Biggs had a short spell and was replaced by Sherwin, at the other end, and Jim McIntosh replaced Banthorpe. Burghley kept the pressure on, with regular wickets preventing any decent partnership. Sherwin was replaced by Charlie Biggs and then the fireworks started; an unbelievable 5 over spell that should have brought Charlie his maiden senior a 5fer had his run up been true, 2 great wickets were denied due to overstepping, but he still finished with 3 really important wickets. Jim McIntosh was wreaking havoc at the other end taking 4 wickets and this bowling partnership of Biggs and McIntosh massively turned the tide for Burghley by taking 7 wickets across 14 overs. Jimmy Biggs and Dinesh Swaminathan tidied up the tail and Moulton Harrox were all out for 124. McIntosh took 4/36, Charlie Biggs 3/18 and one a piece for Banthorpe, Swaminathan & Jimmy Biggs.
