Wildsmith and Ruffell Rescue Burghley Before Bowlers Seal Convincing Victory

James Biggs16 Jun - 13:07

Burghley Park recover from early trouble to post 220-9 before a disciplined team bowling display secures a 75-run win

Burghley Park CC produced an excellent all-round performance to claim a comprehensive 75-run victory after skipper Pete Foster won the toss and elected to bat first.

On a surface offering assistance to the bowlers, Burghley found scoring difficult early on and slipped to 91-7 as the visitors' attack kept a tight grip on proceedings.

Ryan Gilmour got the innings underway with a fluent 21 from 32 balls, striking three boundaries, while Michael Hobbiss added 10 and James Laud contributed a brisk 10 from 12 deliveries. Pete Foster also reached double figures with 10 from 16 balls before the middle order came under pressure.

Olly Billington battled for 10 from 22 balls and Sam Potter (4) and Ewan Williams (3) were unable to build substantial partnerships as wickets continued to fall. At 91-7, Burghley were in danger of posting an under-par total.

However, brothers Raiffe Headley and Caius Headley sparked the recovery with a vital eighth-wicket stand. Raiffe struck 29 from 41 balls, including four boundaries, while Caius made a composed 28 from 41 deliveries, featuring a four and a six. Their partnership lifted Burghley to 135 before Raiffe was dismissed.

The innings was then transformed by an outstanding unbeaten stand between Xavier Wildsmith and Peter Ruffell. Wildsmith anchored the closing stages superbly, finishing unbeaten on 45 from 54 balls with two boundaries, while Ruffell provided excellent support with an unbeaten 20 from 42 deliveries, hitting two fours. Together they guided Burghley to a competitive 220-9 from their 50 overs.

The visitors' bowling was led by James Kimber, who claimed 4-37 from his 10 overs, while Harry Brindle returned 2-46.

Defending 220, Burghley's bowlers made an immediate impact. Raiffe Headley struck first when Will Taylor was caught by Olly Billington after making 11, before Caius Headley removed Harry Wells (12) and Zac Shelbourne (2) to leave the visitors struggling at 32-2.

The pressure intensified when Caius trapped Wells to make it 36-3, and from there Burghley maintained control throughout the chase.
Sam Potter produced a crucial spell through the middle overs, removing both James Kimber (21) and Daniel Cleveland (29), each caught by Foster. Foster's two catches were important moments in breaking the visitors' most threatening partnership of the innings.

Ryan Gilmour then delivered the decisive blows. He accounted for Harry Brindle (13), caught by James Laud, before dismissing Henry Styring for 12 and Carl Stubbs for 1. Gilmour finished with impressive figures of 3-37 from his full allocation of 10 overs.

Caius Headley wrapped up an excellent personal performance by claiming his third wicket when James Dewhurst was caught by Foster, ending the innings on 145 in the 45th over.

The bowling honours were shared across the attack, with Caius Headley returning outstanding figures of 3-23 from 8 overs, Ryan Gilmour taking 3-37 from 10, and both Raiffe Headley (2-20 from 7 overs) and Sam Potter (2-27 from 8 overs) collecting two wickets apiece. James Laud also played a key supporting role, conceding just 11 runs from 7 miserly overs.

Burghley's fielding backed up the bowlers superbly. Foster finished with three catches, while Billington, Laud, Wildsmith and Gilmour all held important chances.

After recovering from a precarious 91-7 through the resilience of Raiffe Headley, Caius Headley, Xavier Wildsmith and Peter Ruffell, Burghley completed a deserved victory with a disciplined and relentless bowling performance to secure a 75-run win.
