After skipper Alex Ashwin won the toss and elected to bat, openers Josh Weller and Ryan Gilmour laid a solid platform with a fluent half-century stand. Weller struck 24 before departing, but with Burghley reaching 60-1 at the end of the 10-over powerplay, the visitors had every reason to be pleased.
What followed was Burghley's strongest passage of the day. Gilmour and James Laud took control, punishing anything loose and steadily turning the screw on the Woodhall Spa attack. Their partnership of 116 put the visitors in a commanding position, with Laud producing an excellent 76 and Gilmour anchoring the innings superbly.
At 176-1 with 14 overs still to play and eight wickets in hand, Burghley had their sights set on a score well beyond 250. However, cricket can change in the blink of an eye.
Woodhall Spa's bowlers launched a remarkable fightback. Toby Wheatley tore through the middle and lower order with figures of 5-22, while Alex King claimed 4-32 as Burghley suffered a dramatic collapse. From the comfort of 176-1, the innings unravelled to 218 all out. Only Pete Foster (11) and Ewan Williams (12) managed double figures outside the top three as the hosts seized back momentum in stunning fashion.
Burghley responded brilliantly with the ball.
An early run-out from Craig Burton removed Oliver Carr before Xavier Wildsmith and Josh Weller both struck with lbw decisions to leave Woodhall Spa reeling at 25-3. The visitors were on top and sensing a memorable victory.
Then arrived the moment that changed the game.
Pakistani international Tayyab Tahir, fresh from representing his country in white-ball cricket and recently featuring in the Pakistan Super League, joined forces with Ollie Caswell. What followed was a masterclass in rebuilding an innings.
The pair calmly absorbed the pressure before gradually taking control, adding almost 160 runs together. Caswell played his part superbly, compiling 70 before James Laud finally broke the stand.
At 181-4, Burghley still had a glimmer of hope.
Tahir quickly extinguished it.
Showcasing the quality that has seen him represent Pakistan on 19 occasions, he accelerated through the gears in devastating fashion. Supported by former Sri Lankan international Prasanna Jayawardene (3*), Tahir brought up a magnificent century before launching a late assault that left the visitors with no way back.
Finishing unbeaten on 122 from just 100 deliveries, Tahir guided Woodhall Spa to victory with eight overs to spare, underlining the difference genuine international class can make.
Despite the defeat, Burghley can take encouragement from long periods of excellent cricket and will look to bounce back immediately when they return to action next weekend in the George Marshall T20 Cup against Boston and Moulton Harrox.
