Lindum edge out 1st XI in final over thriller

James Biggs11 Sep - 09:28

Burghley Park’s determined effort in the field and with the bat pushed Lindum to the final over in a nerve-wracking contest. Despite a valiant display, Burghley narrowly missed out on victory in a match that showcased their resilience.

Burghley Park 1st XI travelled to Lindum for their final away fixture of the season. Lindum captain Will Taylor win the toss and had no hesitation in sticking Park into bat. James Laud and Ryan Gilmour began proceedings for Burghley, but it was tough work early on against James Kimber, who was extracting good pace and bounce from the pitch, and Harry Brindle's left arm spin from the other end. After taking a heavy blow to the unmentionables, Gilmour was the first man to depart, strangled down the leg side by Kimber for 3. David Platt was only able to add 5 before being trapped LBW by Brindle and when Foster departed for 14, bowled by Will Wright, the score read 65-3 from almost 20 overs. This was testament to some excellent bowling and superb ground fielding by the home side. Laud was still battling at the other end, and joined by Sam Potter, the pair built a bit of momentum in Burghley’s favour. Potter added 39 to the total before offering 2 catches in the space of 2 deliveries, the first a calamitous drop at mid-wicket by Taylor, before Rob Cook took a stunning low catch to his right at backward point to give Brindle his second wicket. Joined by Olly Billington, James Laud moved past 50 from 94 balls in an incredibly mature and patient innings that was hopefully setting the stage for a late assault. With just 10 overs left of the innings, Laud was the next man to depart for 65, LBW to Charlie Jubbs. Despite a resilient 21 from Billington, Josh Gallimore, Chris Logan, Alex Ashwin and Charlie Sharpe all fell for single figure scores trying to add late runs and Burghley were bowled out for 196, James Biggs the unbeaten man with 4*. Harry Brindle the standout bowler for Lindum with 5-16 from 9.3 overs.

Ashwin and Logan shared the new ball for Burghley against a young opening partnership of Brindle and Max Cartledge, and with a modest total on the board, early wickets looked like a must. Lindum's teenage openers however, had other ideas. Scoring was still tough, but both men were able to blunt the Burghley attack. The score had moved to 87 before Sam Potter made the breakthrough, bowling Cartledge for 36. When the league’s 2nd highest run scorer, Will Wright walked out to the crease, Lindum needed just 110 from 28 overs. After Brindle had passed 50, the delivery before the drinks break proved to be a slight turning point for the game. A mix up between the batsmen left Wright scrambling to get back to his crease, just about managing to do so, but in the process injuring his hamstring leading to a runner being used. The injury left Wright below his fluent best and the confusion that a runner causes almost bought some opportunities.

With 20 overs remaining, and after Laud and Potter had completed their 10 overs, 0-30 & 1-48 respectively, Alex Ashwin and Ryan Gilmour came into the attack and their arrival had an almost immediate impact. Ashwin bowled Brindle for 68 before Gilmour saw the back of Gareth Purshouse for 6. 10 overs remained with Lindum requiring 45 runs with 7 wickets in hand. What should have been a routine run chase, turned into anything but that. Gilmour claimed a further 2 victims having Wright caught by Potter for 40 and Rob Cook caught by Platt for 14. With just 2 overs remaining and Lindum requiring 10 runs, it was down to Burghley’s 2 Kiwis, Logan and Gilmour, to send down the remaining 12 balls.
Logans first 4 deliveries went for just 4 before he bowled Will Taylor and then the very next delivery had Alex Scully caught behind by Foster.

6 balls remained, 6 runs required. 4 runs came from the first 4 deliveries before an untimely wide left just 1 to win from 2 deliveries which was scampered the very next ball.

A superb fight in the field and with the ball by Burghley and the second time that Lindum have won a thriller this season. Attention now turns to the visit of Bourne this Saturday.
