Saturday 1s kick off season with Oundle Friendly.

James Biggs21 Apr - 18:52

Saturday saw the return of cricket for the 1st XI as they travelled to Milton road to take on Oundle Town.

Burghley bowled first with a new look opening partnership of Peter Ruffell and Xavier Wildsmith. The pair bowled with good pace on a wicket that didn't quite suit their style of bowling, however they still beat the edge and challenged the Oundle opening pair on a regular basis. However, Otto Jozsa and Josh Smith were able to negate the first 10 overs without loss. Stuart Biggs amd Ryan Gilmour were introduced in to the attack and it was Biggs who made the first breakthrough. Jozsa was bowled for 33 by the Burghley veteran before he also removed Smith, caught by Wildsmith at Point for 49. Gilmour had taken a few over to find his rhythm but the old adage of **** gets wickets proved true. Conor Craig (20) could only find the safe hands of Ruffell on the deep mid wicket boundary from a filthy long hop. James Biggs had replaced big brother Stuart from the pavillion end and he was soon in on the wicket taking action. He too took the half tracker tactic that proved successful. Mark Hodgson's (16) shot would have looked more at home at the crucible rather than a cricket pitch when he was early on the pull shot and the ball lobbed back to Biggs from the toe end of his bat and the bowler took the simplest of catches. Bill Amas could only manage 5 before Biggs found the edge and Olly Billington did the rest behind the stumps. Harrison Craig also added just 5 before hitting a J. Biggs full toss to Ruffell at deep square leg. Oundle found themselves 149-6 before Patrick Harrington and Will Compton formed a partnership of 73 helped by a couple of dropped chances from the Burghley fielders. Ruffell and Wildsmith were back in the attack for the final 10 overs, and once they broke the 7th wicket partnership, they soon finished off the Oundle innings. Wildsmith had Harrington caught by potter for 56 and the final 3 wickets fell for just 9 runs. Ruffell claiming Alfie Sullivan and Jack Roberts, Wildsmith adding Primesh Patel to his list of victims all for just 1 run each. Wickets shared around by the Burghley Attack, J. Biggs with 3-42, S. Biggs & Wildsmith with 2-41, Ruffell 2-60 and Gilmour 1-39.

With 231 the target for Burghley, Ryan Gilmour and Olly Billington took to the crease. The pair started well, punishing any loose ball from the Oundle attack. Their parnteship was nearing 50 when Compton found a way through Billington's defences for 20. Gilmour then played an uncharacteristically rash shot to Roberts to fall for 20 before the spin of Hodgson, Harrison Craig & Alfie Sullivan took control. Hodgson accounted for Ewan Williams (12), Sam Potter (1), Harry Sorensen (1) and Wildsmith (2) finishing with 4-28, Ruffell (13) picked out mid on from a H. Craig full toss and Sullivan removed Pete Foster (26), Stuart Biggs (13). James Biggs (5) was the final man out, stumped by Amas from the bowling of Sullivan after appearing to just be stood out of his crease with no thought of the consequences. Burghley all out for 147.

A good run out for the guys before their first league game at home vs Spalding on Saturday.
