Burghley's young bowling attack took 6 of the 8 wickets (2 run outs) required to beat bottom side Freiston on Saturday in an enthralling SLB Championship clash.

Captain Alex Ashwin won the toss and chose to bat, and the decision looked a good one in the early stages. Mike Hobbiss and Lando Thain had moved the score quickly towards 50 in just 5 overs before Hobbiss picked out the man at point to be dismissed for 27. Josh Weller picked up where Hobbiss left but soon found his partner gone for 19 after Thain chased a wide delivery which was the keeper take a good catch behind the stumps. Oscar Jackson joined Weller and the pair scored well, putting bad balls away but also running well between the wickets. They had moved the score to 96 before Jackson top edged a hook shot and offered a simple catch to 1st slip to be dismissed for 22. Pete Foster was unable to add many to the total as he gloved behind for just 4. Charlie Biggs then came to the crease and looked to rotate the strike with the more powerful Weller. Josh bought up a well-made 50 before he was caught for 57 leaving Burghley 150-5. Ryan Gilmour and Biggs then looked to steady the ship and set a platform for Burghley to attack in the later stages of the innings, however Biggs was caught behind for 9 and he was soon joined by Harry Armstrong back in the pavilion who was dismissed for 1. Chris Logan joined Gilmour and the kiwi pair set about raising the tempo of the innings. After a watchful start, Gilmour was able to pull out his array of sweep and reverse sweeps, whereas Logan took a much more brute force approach. The 50 partnership came and went before Logan was excellently caught on the long off boundary for 19 from just 9 balls. Skipper Ashwin then picked up where Logan had left off as he and Gilmour looked to make the most of the tiring Freiston attack. Ashwin plundered 34 from just 14 balls, Gilmour finished 55 not out and Will Portlock added 3 as Burghley closed 272-9.

With an imposing total to chase, Freiston would have been banking on a quick start and that is exactly what they got. Charlie Biggs was unable to find his usual line and length and was punished by the dangerous Ilyas who scored a quick 70 in the return fixture earlier in the season. After 10 overs of pace, the spin of 13-year-old Harry Armstrong was introduced and immediately paid dividends. His 4th ball snuck through the defences of Freiston skipper Paul. Ashwin was able to the breach the defences of Ilyas after the opener had bout up his 50 before Armstrong stuck twice more in quick succession. Panjwani was caught excellently by Lando Thain for 0 and Charlie Biggs caught Moeed for just 2 to leave Freiston 101-4. 15-year-old Will Portlock replaced Armstrong and bowled very well with limited early reward. His patience was later rewarded as Ansar found the safe hands of Weller on the long on boundary to leave the young off spinner with figures of 1-36. Ryan Gilmour was also bowling with little reward from the other end before he took a good caught and bowled to remove Ahmed for 32.

Charlie Biggs was then re-introduced into the attack and the 13-year-old had put his shaky start behind him. He bowled with good pace and excellent control and was soon rewarded with his first wicket having Saeed caught behind by Foster for 38. His second came soon after with another good catch being taken by Armstrong. With the score on Double Nelson (222) the curse struck twice in 2 balls with 2 run outs by Hobbiss and Gilmour finishing the Freiston Innings.

Burghley's young Bears with combined figures of 6-128 from 20 overs shows the future is bright.

Another 20 points for the league champions before the final game if the season against Boston on Saturday 14th.
